Drape, weight and movement<\/h2>\n
Natural silk has a weight of its own. When it hangs, it does not stand away from the body or puff up. It follows the line and forms soft folds where the body moves.<\/p>\n
Drape is the way a fabric falls from the point where it is held, from the shoulders, the waist or the hips. A fabric with good drape holds the line without needing much inner structure. That is why in a straight-line dress such as ARETHOUSA, the line is the whole design.<\/p>\n
Movement is the result of the two. When you walk or turn, silk follows you with a slight delay and then settles. That delay is what makes a dress look alive, in photos and even more so on video.<\/p>\n
That is why the movement of silk matters more in a minimal design. When there is no decoration, the movement of the fabric becomes the detail itself.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
This is also why a silk wedding gown with very little inner construction can look more finished than a heavily structured one. The fabric holds the line on its own.<\/p>\n
\n The sheen of silk is not uniform. It changes with the angle and with movement, which is why it looks deep, almost liquid, rather than shiny.<\/p>\n In practice, a silk wedding dress changes through the day. Morning light makes it look calmer and more matte, afternoon light warmer. That is why it is worth seeing it in natural light before you decide.<\/p>\n This also matters for how you will be photographed. A more matte silk looks soft and calm, a glossier one gives the lines more intensity.<\/p>\n The word \u201csilk\u201d describes a whole family of materials with different textures, weights, drape and behaviour.<\/p>\n In wedding dresses this matters a great deal, because the same design in two different silks can look like two different dresses. A slip in silk satin hugs the body, the same slip in crepe falls more quietly and more matte.<\/p>\n That is why the fabric is chosen together with the line, not afterwards.<\/p>\n One silk can create a fluid, almost floating silhouette, another a more structured line. The right choice depends on the design, the body and the way you want the dress to move.<\/p>\n Greece has its own silk tradition, and Soufli is one of the most important historic silk centres in the country.<\/p>\n Soufli became an important centre of silk production in the late 19th century, and silkworms are still raised there today. Our decision to work exclusively with 100% Greek silk from Soufli is a conscious choice of material, not simply a note on origin: we know what we buy and we check the fabric before it is cut.<\/p>\n When you touch a Lefkon dress, you are touching a fabric that was checked before it reached the cutting table. That matters more than any label.<\/p>\n The chain stays in Greece from start to finish. The silk comes from Soufli and every wedding dress is sewn by hand in Patras, only once it has been ordered. Material and making are planned together: the fabric is chosen for the specific line, and the line is cut and sewn the way a natural silk asks to be.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n For brides outside Greece, \u201cGreek silk\u201d can sound like a detail on a label. In practice it means a short, traceable chain: we know where the silk comes from, and the dress is made in the same country, by people we work with directly.<\/p>\n \n Because quality is not just a word in the description of a fabric. It is something you should feel when you touch it and see when you wear it.<\/p>\n Silk is a natural protein fibre and holds far more moisture than polyester. In the ASTM D1909 table, the moisture regain value used in trade is 11% for silk and 0.4% for polyester.<\/p>\n In practice, how pleasant a dress feels on a hot day does not depend on the fibre alone. The weight and weave of the silk, the lining and the line all play a part, which is why we choose them together, with the season of the wedding in mind.<\/p>\n For a winter wedding, a light silk is not enough on its own. The answer is layers, a long sleeve or a silk kimono or vest on top, such as the ATHENA kimono with long sleeves.<\/p>\n There are practical points worth knowing too. Silk creases more than polyester and a single drop of water can leave a mark. At an island wedding, with luggage to carry and sea wind, this needs planning ahead.<\/p>\n Silk is not part of our designs as a sign of luxury. We choose it because it is the material that lets a minimal design exist the way we imagine it.<\/p>\n In a design judged by its line, silk gives the drape and movement it needs. Because it is chosen together with the line from the first conversation, it shapes how the dress is cut, where it falls and how it moves with you. And because silk can be worn every day, garments such as a top or a skirt can be worn again after the wedding.<\/p>\n If you are unsure, bring a photo of the wedding venue to your first appointment. Hold the fabric and let it drop: silk usually falls more softly and fluidly.
