How Is a Handmade Wedding Dress Different from a Ready-Made Dress?
What handmade really means in a wedding dress, how it differs from a dress produced in standard sizes, and where the difference shows: fit, fabric and finish.
Handmade is easy to write on a label and hard to check. Yet the difference between a dress made by people for one woman and a dress produced in standard sizes is real, and it can be seen and felt.
This article is about how a dress is made. Where its design begins is a separate question. Handmade describes the making. Designed from the start for one woman describes the design. They are two different qualities, and at Lefkon they exist together. We look at the design side in what a bespoke wedding dress is.
What handmade actually means
In fashion, handmade does not always mean that every stitch is sewn by hand. Ateliers combine hand and machine work in different ways. What makes a dress handmade is that it is cut, assembled and finished by people working on that single piece, with hand work wherever precision matters: hems, closures, the inside of the bodice, the edges of the silk.
The question is not only how each seam was sewn. It is whether someone guided every part of the dress with that dress, and that body, in mind.

How a ready-made dress is made
A ready-made dress is designed once and produced in a range of standard sizes, often in quantity. It arrives finished, and the bride is fitted to it afterwards through alterations: taken in at the seams, shortened at the hem.
Alterations can improve a fit, and for many brides they are enough. What they cannot do is change the proportions the dress was originally cut for.
FROM THE COLLECTION
VIEW THE COLLECTIONWhere the difference shows
In the fit. A dress cut on your measurements follows your proportions from the first cut. The difference shows at the shoulders, the waist and the back, where no standard size fits everyone.
In the fabric. Natural silk is fluid and slips as it is cut and sewn. Handled slowly by experienced hands, it falls cleanly. Rushed, it puckers and pulls, and in a simple design every flaw shows. Why silk is worth the extra care, we explain in why choose silk for your wedding dress.
In the finish. The inner structure, the finishing and the proportions are what hold a dress in place through a long day. Nobody sees them, but they show, because a well-made dress moves differently. More on this in what makes a wedding dress truly unique.
Who makes it
With a dress produced in quantity, the people who made it are rarely visible. A handmade dress is made by people who can be named, working on one piece that exists because a woman ordered it.
For many brides that matters as much as the result. Knowing who made your dress, and that nothing was produced in advance and left unsold, changes your relationship with it.

Time
A dress made by hand for you begins only after you order it. It is cut, fitted and finished on its own schedule, which depends on the design and on how many fittings it needs. Starting early gives each stage the time it needs. How early, we explain in when to start your wedding dress.
Which one is right for you?
Not every bride needs a handmade dress. If what you want is to try on many finished dresses and leave with one you love, a bridal shop with ready-made dresses may suit you better.
If what you are looking for is a dress made for your body, in a fabric chosen for how it moves, by people you can name, the difference is worth the time.
How we work
Every Lefkon dress is handmade in Greece by specialised craftspeople, in 100% Greek silk from Soufli. Nothing is produced in advance: each piece begins after it is ordered, is cut on your own measurements and is shaped through fittings on your body. The design itself can begin from a line in the collection that is creatively adapted, or from a new idea, so every dress is both handmade and designed for the woman who wears it. You know who made your dress, and everyone involved in making it is paid fairly.

Frequently asked questions
Is a handmade wedding dress sewn entirely by hand?
Not always. Ateliers combine hand and machine work in different ways, so it is worth asking which parts of the dress are sewn and finished by hand.
Can a ready-made dress be altered to fit like a handmade one?
Alterations can improve the fit considerably. They cannot change the proportions the dress was originally cut for, which is where a dress cut on your measurements differs most.
Does a handmade wedding dress take longer?
Yes. It begins only after it is ordered and is shaped through fittings, so the time depends on the design and the number of fittings. Starting early leaves room for each stage.
