What Is a Bespoke Wedding Dress?
What a bespoke wedding dress means, how it differs from made-to-measure and from a ready-made design, and how a dress is created at Lefkon.
The word bespoke is used a lot in fashion. But a truly bespoke wedding dress does not simply mean “a wedding dress made to your measurements”.
It means the creation starts from the woman who will wear it.
Bespoke and made-to-measure are not the same
The two terms are often used as if they meant the same thing, but they are not always identical.
Made-to-measure mainly describes fit: an existing design and pattern is adjusted to the measurements of the woman who will wear it.
Bespoke, in its traditional sense, describes a process: the garment is designed and cut for one specific person, on a pattern of its own, and takes its final shape through conversation and fittings.
That is why we prefer to explain our own process precisely, rather than rely on a single term.
We do not start from a size
At Lefkon we start from you. We settle on the design and take your measurements. Then we draft the pattern from scratch to your own measurements, and we create a wedding dress sewn exclusively for you.
You can see how it works in practice, step by step, in how a made-to-measure wedding dress is made.
FROM THE COLLECTION
VIEW THE COLLECTIONWhat changes in the experience?
Your relationship with the dress changes. You create a wedding dress that starts from you.
The fit, the fabric, the proportions, the details and the construction are treated as one whole, not as successive corrections to something that already existed.
Is bespoke for every bride?
Not necessarily.
If what you want is to try on many ready-made designs and leave with a dress you liked, a bridal shop may be the way that suits you best.
But if what you are looking for is the process of creating a wedding dress that did not exist before you, then the bespoke approach is something different.
How much time it takes
A wedding dress that starts from scratch needs room to evolve, from the first conversation to the fittings. How early it is worth starting, we explain in when to start your wedding dress.
What bespoke means at Lefkon
It means the process starts from the woman who will wear the dress: her body, her aesthetic, the way she wants to move, the kind of wedding she is having and, above all, how she wants to feel.
A design can begin from a line in the collection that is creatively adapted, or from a new idea. Either way, the dress is made from the beginning to the measurements of the woman who will wear it, not from a ready-made size.
The process moves through four stages:
- The conversation. At the first appointment, which is private and has no time limit, we talk about you, your wedding and how you want to feel.
- The line and the fabric. We choose the line and the silk together. The fabric shapes the drape and the movement, which is why it is part of the design from the start. A design from the collection can change in length, back, sleeve, straps or neckline without losing its identity.
- The making. We take full measurements, and the dress is cut and sewn from the beginning on them.
- The fittings. At each fitting the line is corrected on your body, not on paper. How many are needed depends on the design, and the schedule is agreed together at the first appointment.
That is the point where a wedding dress stops being just a dress and becomes something personal.
If you want to see whether the aesthetic and the process fit what you are looking for, the first step is a personal conversation. Book a private appointment.
