A White Dress Instead of a Traditional Wedding Dress

More and more brides come into the atelier and say the same thing: “I don't want a wedding dress, I want a beautiful white dress.” They usually do not mean something cheaper. They mean something that does not make them feel in costume.

It is a valid choice. But there are a few things worth knowing before you decide.

When does it work and when does it not?

It works when the wedding is small or civil. City hall, a courtyard, a table for thirty guests, a hot island wedding. There, a simple white dress does not look like less, it looks right.

It does not work as well in a church full of people with a formal evening reception. Not because it is not allowed, but because the scale of the space calls for scale in the outfit too. If the day is big and the dress too small in presence, you will feel it.

What makes a dress look bridal?

It is not the train or the tulle. It is three things, and none of them has to do with volume.

The fit. A dress bought in a size falls like clothing. A dress cut to your measurements falls like a wedding dress, even when it is simple. The difference shows at the shoulders and the waist, where no size fits everyone.

The fabric. Natural silk has weight and drape. It does not puff up or stand stiff, and it has a sheen that never shouts. The absence of decoration. It sounds contradictory, but the less a dress has on it, the more it is judged by its line. That is why simple wedding dresses are the most demanding to sew, not the easiest.

Will I be able to wear it again?

This is usually the real question behind “I want something simple”. The honest answer is that it depends on the design, not the intention.

A long white dress with a train does not get worn again, however simple it is. A two-piece bridal outfit will almost certainly be worn again, because the skirt and the top also work separately, with other clothes, on other occasions.

If “wearing it again” is a real criterion and not a consolation, separates give you more than a dress.

White, ivory or off-white?

Pure white is more demanding than it seems. In daylight and next to the skin, it can look cold. Off-white and ivory sit more softly on most skin tones.

The only way to judge is to see the fabric in natural light, not under store lighting. Store lighting makes everything look good.

Where should you start?

Look at lines first, not dresses. What you like to fit close and what you want to fall freely. From there, a dress that is cut to your measurements can be as simple as you like without looking casual.
