It is the question every bride wants to ask and almost none asks first. In Greece the answer covers a very wide range, and that range is not random. It can be explained.
This article does not give you a price. It shows you how a price is formed, so you understand what you are paying for.
What really costs money?
The fabric
It is the single biggest difference and the most visible. A synthetic satin and a natural silk can look alike in a photo and be nothing alike in the hand. Natural silk costs several times more per meter, and a wedding dress needs many meters.
Sewing hours
A simple, clean design does not mean less work. It often means more, because there is no decoration to hide a flaw. A dress cut on the bias takes twice as long as one cut straight, and the result shows.
Fittings
Every fitting means hours: unpicking, adjusting, re-sewing. It is also the reason a custom wedding dress falls right and a ready-made one in a standard size usually does not.
The business model
Every way of working has its own cost and its own value. A showroom with a shop window and sales staff gives immediate access to many ready-made designs. An atelier with private appointments gives time, design and personal attention. Both are part of the price, just in a different way.
What affects the price less than you think?
The amount of fabric is not the same as quality. A voluminous dress in cheap tulle costs less than a simple silk one, even though it looks like “more”.
The name matters, but not always in the direction of quality. There are mass-produced designer wedding dresses and unknown ateliers that sew beautifully.
Hidden costs that appear later
- Alterations to a ready-made wedding dress: often a significant amount, and almost always outside the initial price
- Veil, belt, underwear that the specific dress requires
- Pressing or steaming before the day
- Shipping if you order from abroad, plus customs duties
- Extra fittings beyond those agreed
Ask from the start what is included. The difference between two quotes is often not in the dress but in these.
Does a wedding dress have to be expensive to be good quality?
No. Price on its own is not a guarantee of quality. What is worth looking at is exactly what the price includes: what the fabric is, where and how the dress is made, how personal the design is, and what process is followed up to the final fitting.

The ready-made dress in a standard size is the cheapest at first. But add the alterations and the gap narrows.
The made-to-measure dress costs more, but you do not pay a second time to fix it. And it is the only case where your body does not have to adapt to the dress.
