Wedding Dress for a Large Bust

It is one of the most common concerns we hear at the atelier, and it is almost always put as a problem: “I have a large bust, what can I wear?”

The truth is that the question is framed wrongly. There are no designs that are “allowed” and designs that are “forbidden”. There are dresses cut to your measurements and dresses cut to a size.

Why do ready-made wedding dresses struggle?

A wedding dress in a standard size is cut to a standard ratio of bust, waist and hips. If your bust is larger than that ratio, the size that fits your bust is too big everywhere else.

That is where all the familiar issues begin: the fabric pulls at the front, the waist sits higher than it should, the straps slip, and the hem hangs unevenly because the front “eats up” length.

None of these problems is caused by your body. They are caused by the fact that the dress was designed for someone else.

What changes when the dress is sewn from scratch?

When the pattern is cut to your own measurements, the proportion does not need correcting, because it was never wrong.

The bodice is designed around your own curve, the waistline falls where your waist really is, and the length is calculated with the bust already taken into account. The result is not “a dress that hides”, it is a dress that simply fits.

In wedding dresses made to your measurements there is no size. There are only your own dimensions.

Do I need support inside the dress?

Many brides assume they will need special underwear, or that the dress must be structured and stiff to give support.

Not necessarily. Support can be built into the sewing itself, with inner finishes that do not show from outside and do not add volume. It is decided at the fitting, on the body, not in advance.

Which lines work well?

Without rules or prohibitions, there are some that usually work best:

A deep V or square neckline. It opens up the neckline instead of compressing it, and lengthens the line of the torso.

An open back. It moves the interest to the back and balances the look without adding anything at the front.

Natural fabrics with drape. Silk has weight and falls, it does not puff up or stand stiff. A structured synthetic fabric does exactly the opposite. We explain the difference in silk or satin for your wedding dress.

What should I ask an atelier?

Two questions clarify almost everything.

The first: is the dress cut from scratch, or is a ready-made dress altered? Alterations have limits, a pattern made from scratch does not.

The second: how many fittings are included? A dress that has to sit right at the bust rarely finishes in one.
